Chitosan is composed of randomly distributed β-(1→4)-linked d-glucosamine (deacetyl unit) and N-acetyl-d-glucosamine (acetyl unit) after deacetylation of chitin of linear polysaccharides. Chitosan as a biopolymer possesses various useful physicochemical properties, such as solubility, reactivity, adsorption, and crystallinity. Therefore, its biological properties include biodegradability, antibacterial activity, cytocompatibility, non-toxicity and bactericidal effect. In addition, chitosan has clinically shown the functions of anti-cholesterol activity, antioxidant activity, macrophage activation, anti-inflammatory activity, angiogenesis stimulation, mucoadhesion, anti-tumor, granulation formation, scar formation, hemostasis and wound healing. These advantages make it a very good drug candidate and drug delivery vehicle.
Due to the wide range of applications of chitosan in the medical field (including cartilage repair, bone tissue engineering, liver tissue engineering, vascular tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, regenerative medicine, gene therapy, biosensing, tablet excipients, control release agent, absorption enhancer, etc.). It is approved for use as a biological material by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and regulatory agencies in other countries.
CD Bioparticles offers chitosan polymers of different molecular weights for use in medicine, food, agriculture and tissue engineering. We also offer chitosan polymers which be modified by glycol, hydroxyl, biotin and thiol groups.
