Alginates are natural anionic branched polysaccharides obtained from brown algae and various bacteria. It can be characterized as an anionic polymer composed of mannuronic acid (M block) and guluronic acid (G block) arranged in irregular GG, MG, and MM block patterns in different ratios. As a natural biopolymer, Alginates are considered to be biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, and eco-friendly, and show great potential in the field of drug delivery. Generally, polymer nano-drug carriers have significant advantages such as tunable size, biocompatibility, and sustainable drug release. However, most of these polymer nanoparticles cannot be visualized, limiting further tracing of their biodistribution in cells in situ. Therefore, fluorescent alginates would be of great significance to develop visualized drug carriers for various biological applications including bioimaging and drug delivery.
