It comprises a strong acid of phosphatidylglycerol (PG) and phosphatidic acid (PA) - a dimer composed of four acyl chains, three glycerol, and two phosphate head groups. The deprotonation of one of the phosphate groups renders cardiolipin negatively charged at physiological pH. This mitochondria-specific phospholipid, cardiolipin, is almost entirely biosynthesized and exclusively located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. Its unique structure significantly contributes to the maintenance of membrane-associated protein functions in mitochondria. Mitochondria are predominantly present in cardiomyocytes, and therefore, cardiolipin's performance is exceptional when used as a cardiac drug carrier.
