Dextrans is a heterogeneous polysaccharide synthesized by the action of Leuconostoc mesenterica on sucrose. There are two forms of dextran that are commercialized, dextran 40 and dextran 70. Dextrans is a biodegradable neutral bacterial exopolysaccharide consisting of repeating glucose subunits. Dextran is soluble in water and organic solvents, a property that can be used to prepare different structures by blending dextran with bioactive agents or hydrophobic polymers. For example, interest in dextran hydrogels for soft TEs has increased due to their good biocompatibility, ability to reduce nonspecific protein adsorption and cell attachment. Binding of biologically active moieties such as RGD to dextran can promote tissue growth and regeneration. In addition, dextran can also be chemically modified to form spherical, tubular and 3D network structures. Therefore, dextran is also used in nanomedicine. Dextran nanoparticles have excellent water solubility, high loading capacity and intrinsic viscosity. Therefore, the properties of dextran make it suitable as a nanodrug carrier, cell imaging system, and nanobiosensor.
